Submitting your website to DMOZ (or Open Directory Project) is considered to be one of the vital steps in the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) process. DMOZ is a large, human-edited directory of the Web that offers a wide range of results for major search engines including Google. To have a successful submission to DMOZ directory you need to follow some simple steps:
Step 1:
Make sure that your full company?s information is accessible, if possible with the help of a clearly identified contact button. An e-mail address is certainly not enough. Many ODP editors will tell you if they don't see a real physical or postal address or telephone number, then that website is frequently ignored and probably will never make it inside the directory.
Step 2:
Do not attempt to submit your site multiple times. You should only submit your site once. According to DMOZ rules and regulations, you are only permitted to submit to one specific and related category. Though, in some rare cases and if your website is very large one and offers lots of information, you may be able to submit a second section of it to a different category.
Step 3:
You must provide original and good content on your website. Don?t try to advertise or publish affiliate links or mirror site. If you do so, you will rise your chances of your submission being discarded by the directory.
If you have an affiliate site or service, we advise you that you add lots of new original content, news section or any other extra information that will tell the DMOZ editors that your site has something original to offer and has lots of great content that will be of good use to their users.
Step 4:
Double-check your website content for spelling errors or typos. As much as the DMOZ editors are looking for great and unique content, all are only human and will be annoyed by some typos or spelling mistakes and they might consider your website unprofessional. Statistics has shown that professionally written and carefully built websites with original content, typically make it into the directory in the end.
Step 5:
Select the proper category that best fit your website is a very critical part of that submission process. Try going online and look where other websites similar to you website have been placed in the DMOZ directory.
When you reach to the category that you think is best, click on the "add URL" button. In other categories, sometimes the DMOZ editors might put a note mentioning certain limits to that category. It is suggested that these notes be read cautiously and that you don't submit to these controlled categories if your site doesn't meet the specified criteria.
If you follow these important steps, you will increase your possibility of being listed in one of the most known directory.
